SYNOPSIS

In Moisés Ville, a rural village founded at the end of the 19th century in the heart of the pampas, the last descendants of the legendary Jewish gauchos fight against time to safeguard the memory of the pioneers. Lovingly, they showcase relics of their forbears in an impressive museum, accompany tourists through empty alleyways, and preserve with utmost care their most emblematic buildings. Meanwhile, everyone eagerly awaits the Festival of Cultural Integration, a new event that will define this distant and exotic corner of the world.

DIRECTORS STATMENT

IVAN CHERJOVSKY

When I finished writing my doctoral thesis on Jewish memory in Moisés Ville, in 2013, the first thing I thought was that I had to shoot a documentary on the subject. Moisés Ville occupies a very important place in the history of the Argentine Jewish community, as an agricultural settlement for Jews from Czarist Russia who wished to regenerate the Jewish people through farming. What I wanted to show in the film was not so much that story, already well known, but rather the efforts by the descendants of those pioneers to keep Moisés Ville’s Jewish memory alive today, when only ten percent of the town’s inhabitants are Jews.

Iván Cherjovsky holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Buenos Aires. His research on aspects of the history and present of the Jewish community in Argentina has appeared in various academic publications.

MELINA SERBER

When Ivan told me that he was planning to shoot a documentary on Moisés Ville, it seemed to me that the stars were properly aligned. He is an anthropologist who knows the subject well, having researched it for his doctoral thesis; and he has developed close links to many who live in Moisés Ville. For my part, I was interested in Judaism, in coexistence among different populations, in the documentary as a way of narrating the world, in getting to know one of the historically most significant Jewish communities in the country. After all, I had seen hundreds of photographs of Moisés Ville and heard endless stories about the town. Moreover, one of the things that most attract me as a documentary film- maker is the possibility of showing cultural diversity. My family history, and the concerns with which I grew up, are undoubtedly behind the questions that motivate me: how do various cultures coexist in a neighborhood, town or city? What memories are merged, shared or forgotten?

Melina Serber is an audiovisual designer and teaches history of Latin American cinema at the University of Buenos Aires. She also works as producer and assistant director on several audiovisual projects.
